Windows 2000 build 1911 is a beta 3 build of Windows 2000. It does not offer much over previous builds. However, it does include a few oddities. It marks the beginning of the transition to the 'Beta 3' stage, with some elements being rebranded to 'Beta 3' already. However, many of the elements are not updated, and still, say 'Beta 2'. As this build was compiled a week before the changing of the name to 'Windows 2000', it retains all of its 'NT' elements. This build introduces new icons, which were also used in build 1946 before being replaced in build 1964 with the icons used in the RTM.

Release Notes:

Ugh, I cannot believe the name was changed to Windows 2000 from NT 5.0.
Well I guess this is build 1911 of Windows 2000 Server.  It has quite a few
bugs I've found.  Dialog boxes in foreign languages, IE hanging up and 
beeping a million times a second.  Internet Connection Wizard not working
properly.  Services that dont start and error out, but it's most stable
build with the new GUI updates that have been checked in since Beta 2.

For those of you who want to burn this to CD, the volume label is NTSRV50A
and you'll need to include the two files in the last zip (outside the RAR)
in the root directory of the CD.

NOTE: When installing, you will be warned that 3 files named KBD*.DLL are 
missing.  This is how the original 1911 CD was received from Microsoft.  
Just skip them, NT will still function properly.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

The minimum disk size for installation increased from 539 to 605 MB.

Control Panel[edit | edit source]

This build adds shortcuts to the "Network Connections" and "Scheduled Tasks" folders into the Control Panel, but with the generic folder icon set to be displayed for the former one, while the "Administrative Tools" one received a new icon. Also, folders are now placed before applets.
The "Folder Options" applet received a slightly updated icon, which adds a gradient to the folder and a more blueish accent to the tools.
The "Add/Remove Programs" applet (APPWIZ.CPL) no longer shows "Microsoft Internet Explorer" on the title bar. It also no longer uses an IE document, but now a generic program icon.

This is the last build of Windows 2000:

to fully identify itself as Windows NT 5.0.
which uses the startup sound first seen in build 1671 and the shutdown sound first seen in Windows NT 4.0 build 1273.
which uses Microsoft Sans Serif as the default system font. However, some copies already come with the theme as seen in the RTM with Tahoma set as the default font.
to have the ability to change screen resolution and color depth during setup. From build 1946 on, the screen defaults to 640×480 with the color depth varying on the installed display driver.
to use the GINA design introduced in build 1773. However, it was ported to Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition.
to use the winver design introduced in Windows NT 3.5 build 612.
to include a HAL for Micro Channel-based computers such as IBM PS/2 as well as HALs for C-bus-based computers, save for NEC PC-98, whose HAL was kept in later Japanese Windows 2000 builds up to the RTM build.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

This build is incompatible with the NTLDR of build 1946, making dual boot impossible. At boot, it will bugcheck with KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x0000001E).
