Windows 8 build 7927 is a Milestone 2 build of Windows 8. This build was leaked to BetaArchive on 2011-08-29; beforehand only a .wim file of the Ultimate SKU existed.

The desktop has now been changed to a wordoku puzzle with the leak warning. This wordoku would eventually be solved to form "Start Me Up".

Findings, fixes, enhancements[edit | edit source]

A new version of Redlock is available that unlocks the entire Metro interface, including the start screen. The following tweaks are no longer required when using Redlock.

Applications folder[edit | edit source]

Create a folder on the desktop named Applications.{4234d49b-0245-4df3-b780-3893943456e1}. It is not required to enable Redpill for this to work.

Auto colorization[edit | edit source]

Create a copy of a theme from C:\Windows\Resources\Themes, add AutoColorization=1 to the end of the [VisualStyles] section and apply. It is not required to enable Redpill for this to work.

System Reset[edit | edit source]

Run C:\Windows\System32\sysreset.exe. It is not required to enable Redpill for this to work.

OOBE[edit | edit source]

Run C:\Windows\System32\oobe\msoobe.exe with Redpill enabled. It is not required to disable DWM for this to work.

Lock screen background[edit | edit source]

Enable Redpill, run netplwiz and enable the Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete option in the advanced tab.

Immersive apps[edit | edit source]

Enable Redpill, disable DWM with Ctrl+Shift+F9 and run one of these executables:

  • Immersive Browser: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Immersive Browser\Microsoft.ImmersiveBrowser\miexplore.exe.
  • Immersive Reader: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Windows.Immersive.MoReader\moreader.exe.
  • Metro Control Panel: C:\Windows\System32\SystemSettings.exe.
  • Webcam Application: C:\Windows\System32\webcam.exe.

Other features enabled by Redpill[edit | edit source]

  • Modern Task Manager
  • Ribbon UI in Explorer

Redpill features[edit | edit source]

This build has a rather different Modern UI than both earlier and later builds.

Compared to later builds, the Start screen tiles cannot be moved without dragging from the top - this allows more apps to be pinned to the Start screen. This build already includes a new Metro style AutoPlay dialog and volume control flyout. The clock and volume/network icons are displayed on the start screen, rather than in a separate overlay, and the shutdown/hibernate/standby commands are in the Metro Control Panel rather than the Charms bar.

However, compared to the earlier build 7880, massive changes have occurred.

Accents and backgrounds have been implemented; this means that the Start screen no longer has a white background, however as a result of this the clock is now hard to read due to its black color (designed to be easy to read on the white background). This was corrected in build 7962. The Start screen now has multiple views - while this is hinted at in 7880 by the existence of a "Move to Other View" option found while right-clicking on Start screen tiles, it is unimplemented. This other view is an "Other Programs" view containing all installed programs. As a result of this, there are far less applications in the default Start screen view. Animations have been implemented. Tile colours have been changed to be more uniform, likely with a new algorithm for picking them, and the default tile size is smaller.

A usertile is now located at the top of the screen filled with the user's profile picture (replacing the Search button, which was not seen again on the Start screen until Windows 8.1 Update 1 in 2014), as well as a volume icon and an option to change the current volume. To replace the Metro Horizon (removed, although not entirely so, in build 7880), a Desktop tile has been introduced. Clicking it brings the user back to the classic Windows desktop.

There have also been an immense amount of changes outside of the Start screen. An ImmersiveSettings app has been introduced - the ancestor of PC Settings in Windows 8.x - and several apps have been redesigned to fully use WinRT. Auto Colorization is no longer enabled by default on the Aero theme, and the BSOD has been completely redesigned - it is now black. ImmersiveBrowser, or IE10 Metro mode, has also been implemented. Windows now ships with an early build of IE 10 instead of an IE 9 beta as in build 7880 and earlier builds.

Advanced Task Manager, a more advanced version of Task Manager, has been implemented.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

Aero[edit | edit source]

This build appears to have a slightly broken Windows Aero theme, with only the top portion of the window frame using the blur effect, leaving the side borders transparent.

System Reset[edit | edit source]

System Reset will say that no valid installation media has been found, even if you have the correct installation media inserted.

Windows Preinstallation Environment[edit | edit source]

  • Due to this build only being leaked in WIM form, the ISO is packed with the Windows Preinstallation Environment from the Windows 7 RTM build.
  • Along with this, the System Reserved partition is also shown in File Explorer.
