This build has a rather different modern UI than the subsequent builds, the start screen tiles cannot be moved without dragging from the top, which also allows more apps to be pinned to the start screen. This build already includes a new metro style autoplay and volume control flyout. New folder icons, along with a preview grid, are present in this build when redpill is enabled. This has been permanently removed by build 7973.

Windows 8 build 7927 is a Milestone 2 Windows 8 build. This build leaked on BetaArchive on 2011-08-29; beforehand only a .wim file of the Ultimate SKU existed.

The desktop has now been changed to a crossword puzzle with the leak warning. This crossword would eventually be solved to form "Start Me Up".

  • Auto-colorization
  • Immersive browser
  • New lock screen

  • A copy of Windows Performance Analyzer is included with this build

Findings, fixes, enhancements

A new version of Metro Unlocker is available that unlocks the entire Metro interface, including the Start Screen. The following tweaks are no longer required when using Metro Unlocker.

Applications Folder

Create a folder on the desktop named Applications.{4234d49b-0245-4df3-b780-3893943456e1}. It is not required to enable Redpill for this to work.

Auto Colorization

Create a copy of a theme from C:\Windows\Resources\Themes, add AutoColorization=1 to the end of the [VisualStyles] section and apply. It is not required to enable Redpill for this to work.

System Reset

Run C:\Windows\System32\sysreset.exe. It is not required to enable Redpill for this to work.

OOBE

Run C:\Windows\System32\oobe\msoobe.exe with Redpill enabled. It is not required to disable DWM for this to work.

Lockscreen Background

Enable Redpill, run netplwiz and enable the Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete option in the advanced tab.

Immersive Apps

Enable Redpill, disable DWM with Ctrl+Shift+F9 and run one of these executables:

  • Immersive Browser: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Immersive Browser\Microsoft.ImmersiveBrowser\miexplore.exe.
  • Immersive Reader: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Windows.Immersive.MoReader\moreader.exe.
  • Metro Control Panel: C:\Windows\System32\SystemSettings.exe.
  • Webcam Application: C:\Windows\System32\webcam.exe.

Other Features Enabled by Redpill

  • Modern Task Manager
  • Ribbon UI in Explorer

Redpill features

This build has a rather different modern UI than the subsequent builds, the start screen tiles cannot be moved without dragging from the top, which also allows more apps to be pinned to the start screen. This build already includes a new metro style autoplay and volume control flyout. New folder icons, along with a preview grid, are present in this build when redpill is enabled, these have been permanently removed by build 7973.

Bugs

Aero

This build appears to have a slightly broken Windows Aero theme, with only the top portion of the window frame using the blur effect, leaving the side borders transparent.

Immersive Apps

All Immersive apps require DWM to be disabled and run only in 800x600, completely ignoring the screen resolution of the OS. This can be worked around by using a third party resizing app. The built in Webcam Application is not affected by this bug.

System Reset

System Reset will say that no installation media has been found, even if you have the correct installation media inserted.
