This build's features like (Safe Mode, Unplug and Eject, VGA Mode, etc.) can work as long as you install this build without ACPI in Microsoft Virtual PC (after text-mode setup with using a DOS/Windows 9x boot disk, and boot from hard disk and press F5 to load the Standard PC driver in the first stage of setup). How to install this build without ACPI (for Microsoft Virtual PC users only):

Windows 2000 build 1796.1 is a build of Windows 2000. This build changes the default desktop color from the shade of green used in Windows 95, NT 4.0 and Windows 98 to the shade of blue used in the final version of Windows 2000. A new graphical boot screen and safe to shutdown screen is now used to replace the text-based screens in previous versions of Windows. It changes the system crash screen to resemble the RTM, but the background screen is black and the text is gray. The hibernation and shutdown screen has changed its apperance to look more closer to its RTM iteration.

This build still has the Show Desktop button seen in the previous build, but the menu on the right of the button has been removed.

The build's features can work as long as you use the Standard PC driver in Microsoft Virtual PC.

Bugs

  • The floppy disk controller file, FDC.SYS in this build is broken. Either delete it, rename it or replace it with a later build's FDC.SYS after text-mode setup by using a DOS/Windows 9x boot disk.
  • Booting from the CD results in a BSOD, use a DOS/Windows 9x boot disk to run winnt.exe (not winnt /b) from CD.
  • mmsys.cpl can crash when clicking on CD Music.
  • Sound cards may not operate properly in this build; and can be difficult to fix the problem.
  • The ACPI driver, ACPI.SYS in this build does not work properly in Microsoft Virtual PC and displays a system crash and breaks some features like (Safe Mode, Unplug and Eject, and VGA Mode, etc.) However, if you press the F5 key to load the "Standard PC" driver during the first stage of setup, this build can work properly on Microsoft Virtual PC, though without ACPI.
