A virtual terminal is a command line (CLI) interface present in many Unix and Unix like operating systems, such as Linux. There are usually 6 such terminals in Linux distributions, and the 7th terminal is used for the X server. The first terminal usually displays the boot messages from the kernel, and generally the terminals are accessed by pressing CTRL-ALT-F(1-6) depending on which terminal to be accessed.
