:Grabberslasher has been known for having direct contacts with MS since at least 2004, and he likely obtained this mislabeled build though the official labs. It could be a similar case to that 6001.16628 DVD where the wrong build string was printed on the disc (or ISO image) he obtained. As far as references go, Grabberslasher has been a reliable source of information for builds over the years. So in that regard, it does hold some weight in its credibility. --Blue Horizon (talk) 00:15, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
#Yeah, this is just the wrong label for the already leaked 4020 build. This was proven almost 2 years ago... I suppose we don't need this article. Captainlinux8880 (talk) 22:07, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
:Well see, that's another problem; you keep saying it was already debunked in the past, yet provide no source or actual context to go alongside it. I've thoroughly checked that build string online prior to the article's creation, and came up empty. I *did* find that BetaArchive Wiki used this build string mistakenly for their screenshot descriptions, though that's not really proof in of itself. So if you could provide any source for your claim, that would be night and day compared to what I'm seeing now. --Blue Horizon (talk) 08:11, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
::I think the uploader just didn't know any better and copy pasted the build string from Grabberslasher's release thread, even though the directory name retains the string of the actual build. Even so, this in itself doesn't confirm that the aforementioned build string is invalid. Just the fact the build string was brought up by someone who had close contacts with people from Microsoft labs already has more notability than some out of context and unconfirmed screenshots from old (and defunct) websites. --Blue Horizon (talk) 10:03, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
#If the screenshot is fake, it certainly counts as being a notable fake as the screenshot is contemporary to pre-reset Longhorn development. That said, the public upload of 4005 didn't instantly prove it fake due to buildtag (in fact the buildtag looks plausible, and that would be the obvious place that would disprove a screenshot of this era); so in my opinion it should stay as unconfirmed. Windows NT 3.1 build 340.1 is the October 1992 pre-release build of Windows NT 3.1, available in both Workstation and Advanced Server editions. The latter was shared by BetaArchive member The Distractor on 11 March 2017. It is the earliest available build of the Advanced Server version of Windows NT, at the time still called "LAN Manager for Windows NT".

This build is often mislabeled either as build 319.1 or 328.1, which are actually file versions of its kernel files (
NTOSKRNL.EXE
and
NTKRNLMP.EXE
). NTFS now works in this build.

Around the release of this build, the now well-known error in the processor detection routine appeared, preventing installation on the Pentium II and later without modification. It made its way into the final release and persisted into Windows NT 3.5. It was finally fixed around Windows NT 3.51 build 1002.1.

New features and changes
*This is the first known build to change the desktop background color from gray to teal. This change would later carry over to Windows 95.
*This is the first build to have an option to create an Emergency Repair Diskette, in some places also preliminary named "Emergency Maintenance Diskette".
*Command Prompt now uses the DOS format (
C:\>
) instead of what is seen in OS/2 (
[C:\]
).
*"NT Mode", which refers to the 32-bit protected mode of Windows NT, has been removed from the About box.
Windows NT 3.5x is a family of NT-based operating systems released by Microsoft. These versions of Windows are the last of the NT series with the Windows 3.1-style user interface, as Windows NT 4.0 would introduce the Windows 95-style shell. These versions succeeded Windows NT 3.1.

Notably, an early version of the Windows 95-style shell is available for Windows NT 3.51 via the NewShell update. NewShell replaces Program Manager and adds a new desktop, taskbar, and user interface graphics.

On 15 May 2020, the source code for Windows NT 3.5 build 782.1 was leaked.
Windows NT 3.5
Windows NT 3.5 was released on 21 September 1994. It is the first version to feature the edition names of 'Workstation' (previously called simply "Windows NT") and 'Server' (previously called "Advanced Server"). It cannot be installed on a computer with a processor newer than the original Pentium without modifying setup files. A very rare PowerPC version is also known to exist, but it was downplayed in favor of advertising it on 3.51. (note that this edition and other Windows NT versions supporting PPC only support PReP PowerPC machines, not Macintosh machines that use OpenFirmware)
Shell Technology Preview
The Shell Technology Preview, also known as NewShell, was a hybrid mixture of the NT foundation and the Windows 95 shell, acting as a preliminary version of Windows NT 4.0. Support for the Briefcase functionalities were only available if the user had installed Service Pack 5 on top of the existing Windows installation.

The reported version will be changed to 4.0 if installed. Due to this, many applications which are capable to run on Windows NT 3.51 refuse to install or launch due to requiring NT 4.0 with a Service Pack installed, e.g. Office 97.

Two builds were made for the Shell Technology Preview, both of which are listed below, and were respectively compiled/released in May and August 1995:
Addition of Xbox development pages
I know this sounds silly, but Xbox is a part of Microsoft and I just feel like we should add Xbox into our software family, What do you guys think? Beta Kiwi 02:34, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
What is the first Windows 8 build to remove the classic built-in Windows Games?
Remember when older versions of Windows before Windows 8 had built-in games that you could play like Solitaire, Minesweeper, FreeCell, 3D Pinball, Purble Place etc.? When Microsoft was developing Windows 8, the company wanted to incorporate an app store into the operating system to stay competitive in the drastically changed technology space. However, Microsoft decided to completely scrap the classic versions of these games and instead create Modern versions of these games that are bloated with ads. The classic games may have been removed during Windows 8's development at some point.

What build of Windows 8 completely removed the classic Windows Games? Anyone know what build it was?

WindowsGuy2021 1:43, 7 January 2022

:The first available build that removed games is 8102 (both EEAP and non-EEAP). User:WindowsServerFan (talk) 20:09, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Different Wiki themes when on specific pages
Ok quick idea

what if when we gone on a random page (Ima say Windows XP because it is a well known one), the theme would change

and what I mean by this? You know when you launch the wiki your greeted by a light blue area, which resembles the watercolor theme fron whistler builds in 2000-2001

But, what if these would change once you gone on a specific page

Such as Windows 7 having lets say maybe a whistler theme but under an areo background, Windows XP would contain a luna-colored area as well as (maybe) one of the animated windows flags in the corner (like xp had), Windows 95 builds would have a gray area due to classic theme not being updated yet

tbh this idea is really stupid but i wanna hear your guyses ideas too.

The Purge™️ #2: Purge List
As we plan to conclude the purge proposal amended earlier, I have provided a list of pages that will be purged in one of my sandboxes. Do note that not every page listed on there might be deleted; I just listed those that has a high chance of getting deleted. Alongside, pages that aren't listed here but are deemed non-notable might be subject to deletion once the purge starts. If you have anything important you want to keep, you better back them up to a sandbox or external source.

EDIT: It is unknown when the purge can occur until a bureaucrat gives a finalized time for it but I prefer if there is at least a one week grace period since the posting of this message for other users to get everything backed up before purging. At latest, I would expect it to be done in February or early March.
Internet Explorer 2.0 is a version of Internet Explorer released in late 1995 that introduced support for new features such as SSL (Secure Socket Layer), HTTP Cookies, VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language), and JavaScript. An integrated Email/News client also surfaced. Through OLE drag-and-drop was supported in IE. A PPP network stack was included for operating systems which did not contain such functionality. Also a bookmark import utility was introduced to migrate users' bookmarks from Netscape.

This version comes pre-installed with Windows NT 4.0 and the OSR1 release of Windows 95, but is also available for versions of Windows 95 without or with an earlier version of Internet Explorer. A 16-bit version was available for Windows 3.1x and Windows NT 3.51. It didn't require Win32s to be installed for Windows 3.1x, unlike its predecessor (version 1.5).
Windows 95 build 216 is the earliest available Beta 2 build of Windows 95, which was uploaded to BetaArchive in May 2010.

Changes
* The "Background" tab in Display Properties received a minor update.
*The boot screen now mentions "Beta 2".
*Wastebasket has been renamed to "Recycle Bin".
*Scandisk has been redesigned and now looks similar to the RTM version.
*Start menu now uses a new banner.
*Close, minimize/maximize and help buttons have been updated.
*Command Prompt now reports the version as
Microsoft® Windows 95
.
*The copyright year in the About box has been updated to 1995, despite it was still compiled in 1994.
**Also, Chicago has been replaced with Windows 95.
*The
EDIT.COM
version has been updated to version
0.9.020
.
*Beta Site ID and Password required to install Windows have been changed. Both are also used for later builds of Windows 95 until the requirement was dropped in build 311.

Timebomb
This is one of the first Windows builds to have a timebomb, which is activated by
IO.SYS
. Once activated, it will display a message saying that the pre-evaluation period has expired. Windows will immediately shut down and no longer boot until it is reinstalled with the correct BIOS date set, as
IO.SYS
patches itself to run on an infinite loop once the timebomb activates. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to disable time syncing with the host if using a VM, if available, or replace
IO.SYS
with the version from build 189 before boot.
Odyssey was the codename for a canceled version of Microsoft Windows, which was scheduled for release in the fourth fiscal quarter of 2001, following Windows 2000. It was worked on alongside Windows Neptune, which was at first going to be the first consumer-based Windows operating system based on the Windows NT architecture. However, both Odyssey and Neptune were merged in early 2000 to create Whistler, which eventually became known as Windows XP.

Currently, there are no confirmed builds under the name of Windows Odyssey; and it is unlikely any such builds exist due to it being cancelled early on during its development.
