'''Ubuntu''' is a distribution of [[Linux]] that was started in 2004. Unlike many other Linux distributions, Ubuntu is designed for use as a desktop OS and currently owns the 3rd largest market share on OSes.

The Ubuntu system is built on [[Debian]] in infrastructure.

== Versions ==

Ubuntu is versioned differently to other software, with the main version indicating the year of release and subversion indicating month, so if it was released in September 2007 it is version 7.09 and in December 2013 it is version 13.12. The first version was 4.10 (October 2004).

Ubuntu versions are named after various different animals, similar to how versions of [[Debian]] are named after various Toy Story characters. Here is a list:
== JPEG images ==

Firstly, unleaked and fake builds are allowed to breach the image guidelines, and thus can be JPEG. Secondly, do not convert images to PNG to "fit" guidelines. [[User:BF10|BF10]] ([[User talk:BF10|talk]]) 12:51, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
:Indeed, converting images to JPEG will do absolutely nothing with the artifacts caused by its lossy compression algorithm. Please don't do that, it's useless and only takes up space. Not to mention converting JPEG photos to PNG is very inefficient. --[[User:Ryuzaki|Ryuzaki]] ([[User talk:Ryuzaki|talk]]) 12:54, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
::At least make all images consistent. {{unsigned|Bubbles}}
:::How consistent? If an image originated as a JPEG, it's better to upload the original lossy compressed file, because you simply can't get anything better off it. == Cleanup the old naming scheme ==

If anyone has a script or bot that can help with changing old naming schemes like "Windows:7" to "Windows 7" and "Windows:NT4.0:1500" to "Windows NT 4.0 build 1500", that would be appreciated. It's everywhere in Windows Vista and later articles and cleaning it up isn't an easy task. [[User:BF10|BF10]] ([[User talk:BF10|talk]]) 22:39, 3 September 2018 (BST)
:Likewise, if anyone has a bot or script to replace the "bios" to "compiled" in for infoboxes alongside correcting the date, it would be well great if that can be used. Like I said though, it is expected to set the bios dates back by 1, not just replace all references of "bios" to "compiled". == Merge Longhorn and Vista ==

There has been a debate on the Discord regarding this. IMHO we should merge [[Windows Longhorn]] into [[Windows Vista]], since even though many ideas such as WinFS that were planned for Longhorn didn't make it to Vista, a lot of them did. This is even noticeable in the terminology used to refer to the development phases: "development reset" implies that the project has been ''restarted'', not ''scrapped''. --[[User:AlphaBeta|AlphaBeta]] ([[User talk:AlphaBeta|talk]]) 17:11, 22 December 2018 (GMT)
# Actually, I {{Oppose}} it too. If you keep adding builds to pages (like with the Windows 10 pages) you would have to find the build before it (with an article) and edit the next/previous setting. == Cancelled versions of Windows ==

There seems to be some inconsistency in the naming of articles covering versions of Windows that have been cancelled and therefore are referred to by their codenames. There is [[Windows Nashville]], [[Windows Neptune]], but then we have [[Microsoft Cairo]] and I think it would be nice if we agreed on a single standard regarding these. I am not going to make this a simple yes/no vote, since this needs to be discussed thoroughly.

Personally I am leaning towards removing the Windows/Microsoft component from the names, i.e. "Cairo", "Neptune build 5111", in order to make it clear that it wasn't a part of the codename. --[[User:AlphaBeta|AlphaBeta]] ([[User talk:AlphaBeta|talk]]) 17:17, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
:Well for one thing, the boot screen of [[Windows Neptune build 5111.1]] refers itself as Microsoft Neptune, but Windows Neptune on the desktop buildtag too. I feel like Windows should be used on builds that have at least one released build but Microsoft for stuff like Blackcomb and Odyssey. ::In my opinion we should use the Windows prefix for everything to separate these projects from things completely unrelated to Windows (such as Microsoft Midori). In fact, if you look at some of the antitrust documents for Neptune/Odyssey, you will see Microsoft reffering to them as ''Windows NT "NepTune"'' and ''Windows NT "Odyssey"'', not ''Microsoft NT''. In my opinion we should use Windows for everything, that was clearly intended as a version of Windows. Cairo is a special case though, as it did not refer to a single version of Windows, instead being a set of components. I am not entirely sure what to do with that. --[[User:Cvolton|Cvolton]] ([[User talk:Cvolton|talk]]) 21:51, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
== Windows RT builds ==

Does anyone have a trustworthy list of Windows RT builds? I want them for my [[User:MCpillager/Sandbox/Windows RT|Windows RT]] page.--
[[User:MCpillager|MCpillager]] ([[User talk:MCpillager|talk]]) ([[User:MCpillager/Sandbox|Sandbox]]) 1004065811 bytes of data
14:18, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
:Before you get any further with this, I'd like to mention that the current agreement is that Windows RT builds will be listed on the [[Windows 8]] page, as they're nothing more than a different SKU of Windows 8. So if you wish to create a separate page for that, I'd suggest you to discuss that in the first place. --[[User:Cvolton|Cvolton]] ([[User Talk:Cvolton|talk]] | [[special:contributions/Cvolton|contribs]]) 21:27, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
== Deletion policy ==

Everybody please review the new [[BetaWiki:Deletion policy|Deletion policy]]. It defines exact reasons under which an article is eligible for quick deletion, which should prevent further confusion. Thanks. --[[User:Ryuzaki|Ryuzaki]] ([[User talk:Ryuzaki|talk]]) 16:05, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

== New restrictions on user pages ==

Beginning today, we are limiting user pages and subpages to '''registered users''' only. A major reason for this change is that many anonymous users are using dynamic IP addresses, which doesn't play well with our abuse filters blocking changes to user pages of other users. Many user pages ended up being abandoned due to this. We also feel that this change will motivate anonymous users to sign up for an account, which also brings several other benefits. Also worth mentioning is that this does not affect user ''talk'' pages, so anonymous users can still respond to messages that other users have left on their talk page.

Existing IP user pages will be kept for at least 30 days from now, after which we will start deleting them. I would also love to use this opportunity to remind everybody that while it's perfectly okay to use your user page and subpages to talk about your interests, keep track of your work on BetaWiki or use it as a sandbox, it's certainly not okay to talk about WNR fantasies or similar topics that could lead visitors to confusion. Such pages can and will be deleted in order to prevent user confusion.

Thanks for flying BetaWiki. --[[User:Ryuzaki|Ryuzaki]] ([[User talk:Ryuzaki|talk]]) 23:11, 30 April 2019 (UTC)
2.27.117.122https://betawiki.net/index.php?title=Windows_Server_2008&diff=52354Windows Server 20082019-05-25T16:27:22Z
2.27.117.122: /* Service Pack 2 */

You need to add <nowiki>__NOTOC__ __NOEDITSECTION__</nowiki> string on your page. If you not add it, everyone will be editing your page. --[[User:DrakonchikUA|DrakonchikUA]] ([[User talk:DrakonchikUA|talk]]) 09:36, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

:How do you add this string? [[User:Arkan9|Arkan9]] ([[User talk:Arkan9|talk]]) 09:40, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
::Actually, you do not need to add anything since there is an abuse filter that blocks editing other userpages that aren't yours. [[User:BF10|BF10]] ([[User talk:BF10|talk]]) 13:04, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
:::Okay, I did not know that. After all I'm still new to this wiki. [[User:Arkan9|Arkan9]] ([[User talk:Arkan9|talk]]) 13:09, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
:I believe you might have misunderstood the function of these magic words.
<nowiki>__NOEDITSECTION__</nowiki>
only disables the small edit links next to headings, but the main edit button on the top is still functional and can't be disabled by some keywords in the article text.
<nowiki>__NOTOC__</nowiki>
disables the gray table of contents, which has nothing to do with other people editing your page. I guess you noticed that they are used on the main page, but that's for aesthetic reasons - the layout would most likely be broken. The reason why you can't edit the main page are not the magic words, but the fact it's protected. Also, as BF10 said, there are edit filters in place that block attempts to edit other users' pages, so this is not even necessary. Don't be fooled by the edit button on the top - editing still works, but the changes won't be able to be saved. --[[User:Ryuzaki|Ryuzaki]] ([[User talk:Ryuzaki|talk]]) 13:14, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
Please do not add any builds without providing a source. Your edit to [[Windows 10 version 1607]] has been reverted. My question is, do you have any source for the build (14384) that you added?
'''Windows 7''' is an operating system developed by [[Microsoft]]. It is intended to fix many of the issues users perceived with [[Windows Vista]]. Windows 7 has NT kernel version 6.1, making it a minor update to Windows Vista. Windows 7 improved performance on older hardware, while also improving many areas of the Aero user interface. It is one of Microsoft's most popular operating systems, running on 35.63% percent of desktop and laptop computers as of January 2019, and prior to December 2017, more than [[Windows 10]].

It replaces [[Windows Vista]] and was replaced by [[Windows 8]]. Mainstream support ended on 2015-01-13, and extended support will end on 2020-01-14.

A pre-RTM build, [[Windows 7 build 7600.16384|7600.16384]], was speculated to be the final version of the product but had a flaw in [[Internet Explorer 8]] which prevented it from shipping.
== Features ==
Windows 7 includes few major new features but does include mountains of enhancements over previous Windows releases.
=== Features added in Windows 7 ===
* Windows 7 added a Show Desktop button to the far right of the Taskbar (note: this feature was first introduced in early builds of Memphis ([[Windows 98]]) and NT 5.0 ([[Windows 2000]]), but was removed during development in both cases).
* Windows 7 introduced Aero Peek, which allows you to "peek" at your desktop without actually minimizing your applications.
* Windows 7 introduced the Superbar, an evolution of the Taskbar.
* Windows 7 added the ribbon to many of its stock applications, although not to Windows Explorer itself.
* Windows 7 includes Internet Explorer 8 and Windows Media Player 12 by default.
* Windows 7 introduced Libraries (note: this feature was first introduced in Milestone 5-7 of Longhorn, but was removed after the development reset)
* It's now possible to add gadgets all over the desktop.

=== Features degraded or removed in Windows 7 ===
* Windows 7 introduced a simplified version of Windows Explorer, which cut underused features from the operating system. Needless to say, many of those features were sorely missed by those who did use them.
* The Quick Launch bar was disabled by default in Windows 7 since the Superbar provides that functionality. It can be re-enabled by manually creating a "Quick Launch" toolbar.
* The classic style start menu was completely removed; the reason for this is probably the feature was removed because users become accustomed with the Windows XP Luna/Windows Aero start menu, so the classic start menu became useless.<ref>[https://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31475 View topic - Any build of Windows 7 with the classic Start menu? - BetaArchive].</ref>.
* The Sidebar was dropped in favor of desktop gadgets.

== Editions ==
Windows 7 is shipped in the following SKUs:
* '''Starter''' is a low-end edition available only through OEMs, who usually preinstalled it on netbooks, tablets and cheap laptops. It does not include the [[Windows Aero]] theme and doesn't support changing the desktop wallpaper and visual styles. Supports 2 GB of RAM at most and comes in x86 version only.
* '''Home Basic''' is available in emerging markets, such as India, Mexico, Brazil and others. It includes the Aero theme, but some of its features are disabled. This edition came in x86 and x64 versions.
* '''Home Premium''' is a standard edition aimed at the home customer segment and is most commonly preinstalled on new computers and laptops. It includes the fully featured Aero theme and Windows Media Center.
* '''Professional''' replaced Vista's Business edition and includes all features of Home Premium. It adds the ability to join a domain and other features commonly used in business environment. Supports activation over a KMS server.
* '''Ultimate''' and '''Enterprise''' are the top-level editions of Windows 7. The only difference between the two is that Ultimate is available via OEM and retail channels and is activated only by WPA, however, Enterprise is only offered through Software Assurance and support activation over a KMS server. Additional features include MUI support.

All of the above editions are offered in '''N''' (Europe) and '''KN''' variants without [[Windows Media Player]]. An '''E''' variant was also planned, which would also remove [[Internet Explorer]], but in the end the variant was not released and the ballot screen was introduced as a replacement to satisfy European Union's demands. Some leaked builds leading up to the RTM are available in this variant.
'''Windows 10 "20H1"''' is an upcoming version of Windows 10 which is scheduled to be shipped at around 2020-04. This version is notable for having the first insider preview builds released before [[Windows 10 19H2]], which it is supposed to replace.

The first Insider Preview Skip Ahead build for 20H1, build 18836, released on 2019-02-14, although earlier builds (beginning after the forking of 19h1_release to rs_prerelease) were sighted on MSFT Buffet a few weeks earlier.
== About abuse filter 6 ==

I figured out that someone might use the <nowiki> </nowiki> tags to hide text on the talk page, thus not triggering it because the text is still visible in the edit zone. But, this still counts as removing content from a talk page because on first glance, it looks as though the text is hidden. Can you do something about it? Thank you. --[[User:Sebono|Sebono]] ([[User talk:Sebono|talk]]) 15:04, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
::It is a common sense not to swear. I know you are the admin but admins don't ban people (or they never should) for telling others not to swear. Your comment is just plain rudeness. I thinks the jobs for admins and mods are to enforce the rules and being role models, if you and LilShootDawg can swear without a consequence, then everybody can copy you and they all can swear on talk pages.--[[User:Bubbles|Bubbles]] ([[User talk:Bubbles|talk]]) 08:54, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
:::Swearing is not against the rules, thus LilShootDawg didn't break the rules and neither has anyone else who sweared. But, this still counts as removing content from a talk page because on first glance, it looks as though the text is hidden. Can you do something about it? Thank you. --[[User:Sebono|Sebono]] ([[User talk:Sebono|talk]]) 15:04, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

[[User:BF10|BF10]] ([[User talk:BF10|talk]]) 17:59, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

'''Windows Vista''' is an operating system by [[Microsoft]]. It was released worldwide on 2007-01-30. It replaces [[Windows XP]] and was replaced by [[Windows 7]]. It reached RTM on 2006-11-08.

== Development ==
The Longhorn project was intended as a bridging release between [[Windows XP|Whistler]] and the later version of Windows codenamed Blackcomb, which much later became [[Windows 7]]. Over time, many features slated for Blackcomb became part of Longhorn, and employees jumped ship from other parts of the company. Longhorn became a bloated, unstable piece of vaporware. The first build to leak publicly was [[Windows Longhorn build 3683|build 3683]], which contained a new theme, and also the foundations for WinFS, and Avalon, which eventually became the Windows Presentation Framework. "Longhorn" was originally intended to be an interim release, but picked up many features slated for its successor.

Stability increasingly became an issue as development progressed, and few builds were publicly released as a result (including the lack of Home Edition builds). In fact, the only build to become officially available from Microsoft to the wider world was [[Windows Longhorn build 4074|build 4074]][source?]. The last known confirmed build from before the development reset is [[Windows Longhorn build 4093|build 4093]]. After the compilation of build 4093, the development of Longhorn was reset, mainly because of the instability of the current Longhorn branch. At about 9 PM, on the same day as the compilation of 4093, Microsoft stopped development of Windows Longhorn and started fresh using [[Windows Server 2003|Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1]] as a codebase, starting the Omega-13 period. Immediate post-reset builds have been primarily focused on reintegrating features from the pre-reset builds while maintaining stability. Most of these builds are similar to [[Windows XP]] in overall look and feel. Few builds from this stage of development have been released, officially or otherwise. Development of Longhorn continued, albeit many features originally slated for inclusion were delayed or dropped to provide a more realistic operating system. Examples of this include WinFS, and what would become Windows PowerShell.

In April 2005, a pre-beta build was released to testers ([[Windows Vista build 5048|build 5048]]). This build showed the progress made since the reset and also proved much more stable than previous builds. [[Windows Vista build 5112|Build 5112]] (Beta 1) was released to the public soon afterward and showcased an early version of the Aero interface, as well as many stability improvements over XP. Over the next year, many builds were pushed to testers in a public beta program. The final build out to public preview testers was [[Windows Vista build 5744|Release Candidate 2 (build 5744)]]. The RTM build was [[Windows Vista build 6000.16386|build 6000.16386]].

== Editions ==
Windows Vista came in many editions. Unlike [[Windows XP]], there was no special edition for Media Center and 64-bit capability, since these features were included in at least one of the consumer editions. Windows Vista also did not have an embedded version, perhaps due to the considerable grunt required to run optimally.
* ''Starter'': This edition is intended for emerging markets and low-cost PCs. As in XP, the 3-program limit was there, and only 1GB RAM was accepted. Other software restrictions applied as well. This version is hence not available in 64-bit.
* ''Home Basic'': Found in low cost to mid-end, this version of Windows Vista does not fully have Aero (though it has DWM) and hence does not have effects like transparency and 3D Flip. Windows Media Center is also dropped from this build. Parental Controls is included, however. It does not have the hardware and 3-program limit.
* ''Home Premium'': The consumer version of Windows Vista, this version includes full Aero functionality and Windows Media Center. It also includes Premium Games (eg - Inkball).
* ''Business'': The business-oriented version of Windows Vista, it contains several features like full RDP (client/host) capability, Group Policy, and domain joinability. However, Windows Media Center and Parental Controls are not included, and Premium Games are disabled by default.
* ''Ultimate'': The top consumer variant of Windows Vista, it is a merger of the features included Windows Vista Home Premium and Business. BitLocker is included in this version.
* ''Enterprise'': The business variant of Windows Vista. It is similar to Ultimate, but without Windows Media Center and includes enterprise-specific tools.

'''Windows XP''' (codenamed ''Whistler'') is an operating system developed by Microsoft, released on 2001-10-25. It is the sixth operating system in the Windows NT operating system line, succeeding [[Windows 2000]] and preceding [[Windows Vista]]. It also succeeded [[Windows ME]] after the end of the Windows 9x kernel. It is one of Microsoft's longest lasting operating systems, with almost 13 years of support (both mainstream and extended) and still runs on less than 5% of desktop and laptop computers worldwide as of 2019-04.

== Main changes ==
=== User interface ===
Windows XP got a major UI overhaul during development, with the introduction of Themes. Users could change the way windows and buttons looked with the new visual style, [[Luna]]. It had three color schemes, which were based on blue, green and silver. Users could still select the [[Windows Classic]] theme from previous versions of Windows ([[Windows 98|98]], [[Windows 2000|2000]], [[Windows ME|ME]], ...), and customize the preset Windows Classic color schemes.

The introduction of ClearType, an anti-aliasing font function allowed easier text reading on desktop computers with LCD-TFT monitors and laptops, but also had an effect on CRT monitors.

The taskbar is locked by default for new user accounts, to prevent accidental resizing or moving of the taskbar and/or the toolbars. Multiple instances of an application are grouped automatically and inactive tray area icons are hidden automatically, to prevent cluttering of the taskbar.

== Editions ==
* '''Starter''': This version was intended for emerging markets, and was introduced in 2004, meant for low-cost PCs. It cannot launch more than 3 programs at a time and will not see more than 512MB of RAM.
* '''Home Edition''': This edition is for low to mid end PCs and can address up to 4 GB RAM. This version was also included in ULPCs, and was sold along with ''Professional''.
* '''Professional''': This is the mainstream high-end version, sold along with the ''Home Edition''.
** '''64-Bit Edition''': This was a special edition for Itanium-based computers. There were two releases, first of which was based on Windows XP and the second of which was based on [[Windows Server 2003]].
** '''Professional x64 Edition''': This was the x64 version based on Windows Server 2003.
* '''Media Center Edition''': This version is especially for Media Center-based PCs, and is not sold normally. System requirements are significantly higher than other editions. This version includes Media Center and new themes and [[Microsoft Plus!]] features such as [[Royale]].
* '''Embedded''': This version is intended for the embedded sector.
* '''Tablet PC Edition''': This version was included in tablet computers from 2002-2006. This is the tablet-optimized version of Windows XP.
* '''N, K and KN Editions''': The N version was made for the European markets and did not include Windows Media Player; the K version was made for the Korean markets and included two shortcuts to Korean websites by default because the government insisted.
